How to collect the saliva samples to send them to the laboratory? Step by step instructions

What elements do we need to build our Homemade DNA Kit?

You will first need to purchase a pack of swabs.

Buy cotton swabs for home DNA testing

 

You will also need to purchase or obtain: two small paper envelopes, one for each participant in the procedure.

Buy two paper envelopes, one for each DNA test participant.

 
 
 
You will need to purchase a large envelope to hold both the small envelopes that will contain the DNA samples, and the processing request form that you will send to the lab.

Purchase a large paper envelope to hold your DNA samples and send them to our lab for testing.

 
 
Then you must prepare an envelope for each participant, and write on the front of each envelope the data mentioned below:

- Full name
- Email address
- Relationship (if you are the alleged father and the alleged child)
- Gender
- Telephone number

Enter some information on the front of each envelope so that we know who each one is.

 
If the swabs have two cotton tips, you will need to cut one of the tips with scissors, so that you can hold it without contaminating the DNA samples that will be obtained from the test.

Instructions for collecting DNA samples from saliva with the swabs: how to use the Swabs

 
STEP 1
Be sure to rub well between the inner cheek and the gums for 30 seconds, using a twisting and rotating motion with your fingers.

STEP 2
After taking the first sample, find a glass or container to place the swab from which you took the saliva sample, and place it upside down so that the cotton dries (As shown in the picture)

Let the swab dry for at least an hour.

Do not touch the cotton as it may contaminate the test. Hold onto the stick that has cut off its end.
 
STEP 3
After the first sample has been taken, prepare the second swab in the same way as the first time.

Take the second swab and do the same as the first swab. Cut at one end.

Also cut off one end of the swab so you can hold it securely.

STEP 4
Insert the swab back into the mouth, but this time on the other inner cheek. Rub the cotton swab for 30 seconds, moving it up and down. Remember to twist and rotate the swab with your fingers to obtain more DNA cells for effective results.

Inside the mouth, move the swab up and down between the gum and the cheek.

 
STEP 5
After you have collected the saliva sample with the swab, place the second swab next to the first, with the cotton facing up. Both should be facing up, so they dry. Leave them for at least an hour.

Place the second swab next to the first, without touching the cotton with your hands.

Repeat the entire process with the other DNA test participant.
 
Repeat the same procedure with another person dna test

Once the above is done, repeat the same process that you have done with the other person participating in the DNA test.

 
LAST STEP
Once both DNA tests are completed, keep both paper envelopes inside the large paper envelope, and next to the form with which you filled out your data.
 
Store cotton swabs in the paper envelopes.

Save the two swabs for each paper envelope, performed by each DNA test participant.

 
That done, go send it to our lab.

This video will help guide you through the cheek swab collection process and answer your common question.
Main points to consider:
  • 1) Do not eat, drink, smoke or chew gum for 30 minutes before collecting samples.
  • 2) The swab tips should not come into contact with any surface other that the inside of the cheek at any point before, during or after collection
  • 3) Move the swab up and down while also rotating. It's very important to rotate the swab with your fingers.
  • 4) Allow the swab to dry before storing. At least one hour.
