- Maternity DNA tests
Why is it better to include a sample from the mother in a paternity test?
A child receives half of its DNA from its mother and the other half from its father. Since half of the DNA that the child receives from the mother will exactly match the mother's DNA, comparing the mother to the child will allow us to eliminate either the maternal DNA or the mother's DNA. It is thus known that the remaining unpaired DNA is that of the biological father.
Without the ability to remove the mother's DNA from the equation, it is not possible to clarify which DNA is from the mother and which is from the father, thus greatly increasing the chance that the results will be inconclusive.
Exclusion of known parents may require additional testing, thus extending the time and cost required to achieve a conclusive result. In general, if the mother is available to test, she should be included. In any case, the test can still be done without the inclusion of the mother if she is not available.
In short, including the mother in the paternity test increases the accuracy of the results. Thus, it is possible to identify which of the child's DNA comes from her. This means that the "probability of paternity" can be calculated with more certainty. Sometimes the results may provide a "mutation", which is where a single STR locus.
