- DNA Test - Paternity
About DNA Samples and Client Data Privacy
One of the first questions our clients often ask regarding paternity testing is: Is there any pain?" "Are there any needles involved in the test?" The answer is simple: "No".
The vast majority of postnatal paternity tests are performed using cheek (or buccal) cells, collected with a painless cotton swab. This is why saliva or cheek tests can be used for DNA testing, as well as why cheek cells are the method of choice for most DNA paternity tests by our users.
Is saliva used for DNA paternity testing?
The saliva found in the inner cavity of our mouths can be used for paternity testing, but there are some definite pros and cons:
Points in favor:
It is the best source of genetic material, and by collecting a large amount of DNA in a relatively small sample of saliva.
It is non-invasive, meaning there are no needles involved and no discomfort in the collection process.
Points Against:
It is very difficult to obtain a pure saliva sample from a newborn, so the risk of contamination during collection is high.
If an exclusion (or "not from father") result is obtained and the lab only has one vial of the client's saliva to work with, the results cannot be confirmed using a separate sample.
Why are buccal cheek saliva collection swabs the preferred method for DNA collection, both by users and our laboratories?
When you buy a DNA paternity test kit from a retail store, it comes with three sets of three buccal swabs. Buccal swabs are not like regular cotton swabs – they are specially designed to effectively collect and trap cheek cells within the fibers.
Points in favor:
- The swabs are cheap, but very effective. Since the kit includes three swabs per participant, the laboratory obtains all the DNA it needs to perform the test and the price of the test is low for the client.
- It is a non-invasive collection method: no needles and no pain.
- The swabs do not require refrigeration.
- Once samples are collected, they are good for up to six months, as long as the swabs are kept in a cool, dry place.
- It is easier and faster for a laboratory to extract DNA from a buccal smear than from blood samples, which considerably reduces time.
Points against:
Buccal swabs may become contaminated if customers do not handle them according to the kit instructions that we will leave inscribed on the kit. However, if this happens, it does not affect the results because it will be detected at the laboratory level during the test. The customer is then asked to collect new samples before testing resumes.
Therefore, our recommendation above all is that, when taking the samples, be careful and follow the instructions so as not to have to repeat the process, and thus avoid contamination of the samples taken by you.
How do we ensure the privacy of our clients' DNA evidence?
As a company and a laboratory, we have an overall rigid policy of confidentiality and data protection that is at the heart of our values. All employees of our laboratories work in the paternity testing segment of our business. These are found to be highly trained and certified, and this applies to our home kit, legal tests, and non-invasive prenatal paternity testing.
We make sure that all the information of the clients that we find on a daily basis remains within our work environment, and once the results are delivered, the results obtained are eliminated from our database, as well as the information of the client and participants. Our reputation for maintaining the highest standards of privacy is just one of the many reasons why our DNA testing laboratories are the most recommended in the United States, and Latin America.
Do you offer anonymous or private DNA testing?
If you see any lab claiming to offer completely anonymous DNA testing, you should be very careful.
This is because in order to provide accurate and complete test results, basic customer information must be collected.
HomeDNAKit provides individuals with the option to opt out of receiving personal data that may be disclosed to a third party that is not an agent (unless contractually permitted or required by you) or used for a purpose other than that for which was originally collected or subsequently authorized by the individual. Please note that the security of protecting the genetic privacy of our clients is of the utmost importance to us.
