- Sibling DNA testing
Is it possible to perform the DNA test to find out if we are siblings?
A sibling DNA test will test the relationship between two or more people to see if they are biologically related as siblings. Sibling tests can also be used to provide reliable proof of relationship when the father is deceased or absent.
What kind of sample is collected in a brotherhood test?
The type of sample that is collected in a sibling DNA test is the buccal swab. This is collected with a cotton swab that is gently rubbed on the inside of the cheek for at least 30 seconds.
In our At-Home DNA Kit blog, where you are, you can find information about how to perform a DNA test by taking samples with a buccal swab. This information is detailed step by step, guided both audiovisually (in the form of a video) and textually: Click here.
Can a DNA paternity test distinguish between siblings?
The answer is yes.
Although it can happen that, siblings can share many common DNA markers used in paternity tests, so the laboratory may need to perform additional tests.
There are two options:
- First option, DNA test on both brothers:
By comparing the DNA profiles of both possible parents to the child's DNA profile, our laboratory personnel can expertly determine which sibling's DNA matches the child's profile.
- Second option, test a sibling with extended analysis: This option can be taken when only one of the possible parents is available for testing.
