- DNA testing grandparents grandchildren
Interpretation of grandparentage results
A grandparent test establishes the biological relationship with a child and their grandparents. If a child's parent is missing or deceased, the grandparents can be profiled to determine if they contributed to the child's DNA profile.
20 different loci are used as genetic markers in DNA testing, as well as one (Amelogenin) to confirm the sex of the person providing the DNA sample. If the presumed father does not have the matching allele at all loci tested, he generally cannot be the biological father.
If he does, then he could be the father. A "kinship index" (called "Direct Index" in the report) is calculated for each locus based on information that includes the portion of the male population that has the obligate paternal allele at that locus. This index is reported for each DNA locus.
Conclusion
The report also shows one of two conclusions: whether the conclusion states “not excluded as a biological father” or “excluded as a biological father”.
If the conclusion states that, “not excluded as a biological father”, this means that the possible father is probably the biological father of the child. If the conclusion mentions “excludes himself as a biological father”, it means that the possible father is not the biological father of the child.
